This song started out as a slow Jazz waltz. I really liked the song and even the lyrics (for a change) but knew I would never get to perform it as a waltz so I began experimenting with different groove. I tried it as a Cha-Cha-Cha and it worked really well, but I have already two pretty strong tunes with that beat. At the time I had started to play some Reggae music (which I love) with keyboardist Matt Jenson, with whom we had been mixing Latin and Reggae feels. While this song has a pretty strong Cha-Cha feel, the drums are playing a Reggae Steppers groove which gives it a whole new dimension. The cool thing is that in Cha-Cha-Cha one of the patterns used by the keyboards has a chop on the right hand and naturally fits on both styles. As much as I love this song I was not happy with the latter part. Gonzalo proposed the Coro section at the end and did an amazing job recording all of the background vocals and this made it work. Rebecca played another wonderful solo in between verses. Eric's incredible "pocketness" throughout the CD, especially in this song, gives it tremendous drive and depth.
This is a long-overdue attempt to do a song in English which I hope you will enjoy.
lyrics
LOVE LIVES HERE NO MORE
I CAN’T GO ON
MY SHIP CAN ONLY GO THIS FAR
IT’S BEEN TOO LONG
WE’VE SAID GOODBYE SO MANY TIMES
I JUST CAN’T EVEN BEAR THE THOUGHT
MY STRENGTH IS GONE
MY HEART’S ALREADY WAY TOO HEAVY
THE RIVER’S DRY
OUR FOREST BURNT DOWN TO THE GROUND
THE JOY WE HAD
IS BUT A DISTANT MEMORY
THE PAIN IS WAY BEYOND REPAIR
WE TRY TO TALK
BUT ALL WE HAVE IS EMPTY SILENCE
‘CAUSE ALL MY TEARS HAVE TURNED TO DUST
YOUR EYES NO LONGER HAVE THE MAGIC THAT ONCE MOVED ME
AND ALL OUR DREAMS HAVE FLOWN AWAY
MY LOVE NO LONGER HAS THE POWER TO DISARM YOU
NO NEED TO FIGHT
WE WON’T FORGIVE, WE CAN’T FORGET
WE KNOW WE’VE TRIED
IF WE DON’T STOP WE’LL SOON REGRET
THE TIME HAS COME TO TURN THE PAGE
THE SUMMER RAIN WILL COME
AND WASH AWAY THE SORROW
‘CAUSE ALL MY TEARS HAVE TURNED TO DUST
YOUR EYES NO LONGER HAVE THE MAGIC THAT ONCE MOVED ME
AND ALL OUR DREAMS HAVE FLOWN AWAY
MY LOVE NO LONGER HAS THE POWER TO DISARM YOU
LOVE LIVES HERE NO MORE

The music of the Cabo Verde diaspora as played by a band hailing from the Lusophone underground of Luxembourg, recorded in Portugal, reissued by a New York label. This well-travelled sound has been enriched by its journeys. It's an upbeat, synth-infused fast-paced homage to Funaná. Karl Grundmann

Almost impossible to pick a favourite from this bunch, they're all so cool. For now, I'm singling out the Kinks one because it's such an original song choice but ask me tomorrow and it'll be a different one! themichaelmoran
